La Nueva San Pedro, a Burgos church that becomes a cultural space
La Nueva San Pedro is a cultural space created inside an old stone church in Burgos. In 2024 VANDA Designers signed the restoration, exhibition design and lighting project, with the aim of opening the building to new uses while keeping its history at the heart of the space.
STONE AT CENTRE STAGE
The original walls, arches, pilasters and stained glass windows stay exposed and tell the story of the building’s different eras. Grazing light from spotlights recessed in the floor washes the stone from below and brings out its texture, turning the walls into a stage set.
A NEW TIMBER STRUCTURE
Inside the nave, a sequence of glulam columns and trusses supports the new roof, opened by skylights that bring daylight into the space. The pale timber dialogues with the stone and the seamless concrete floor, creating a calm, welcoming setting ready to host exhibitions, talks and events.
THE PINK VOLUME AND SUSPENDED LIGHT
A pink volume, set in like a freestanding object, creates new rooms and organises circulation without touching the historic walls. Cascades of ferns on top bring a living green note. A web of cables stretched between the columns holds slim linear pendants, which draw a constellation of light points across the space.
MADE TO MEASURE
As in every VANDA project, every element was designed and made to measure for this space.
